The P&C Federation's new Parent Voice Community allows you to have a say about your child's education directly with the decision makers. We are creating opportunities for parents and carers to be be actively involved in their child's education and wellbeing and have their voices heard.
In 2024, we are continuing to partner with the NSW Department of Education and other government and community stakeholders to provide parents and cares of students in public schools opportunities to add their voice to issues important to them.
If you join our Parent Voice Community you can participate in workshops, interviews, focus groups and surveys to share your own perspectives and experiences*. Some recent Parent Voice consultations explored topics on:
- How schools communicate with parents
- Active travel to and from school
- Mental health resources for teenagers in schools
This year we will be coordinating Parent Voice workshops around issues including:
- Early learning and childhood
- Vocational education training, skills and pathways
- School infrastructure policy
- School funding reform
- Vaping resources and tools for parents and carers
Once you join our Parent Voice Community, you'll receive regular opportunities to have your say on the issues that matter to you, when you want!
What you said
In 2023 the NSW Department of Education undertook small online group workshops with some of our parents to learn more about the challenges faced by parents when communicating with schools. The results highlighted what works well for promoting good communication between schools and parents, including:
- building trusted relationships
- providing opportunities for honest two-way communications
- allowing easy access to information
- offering explicit guidance on how to support school learning.
The parent consultation also identified areas for improved communication and found times where there may be missed opportunities for communication about children's learning and how to support learning at home. Some of the challenges were:
- lack of communication about areas where a child is struggling
- insufficient and/or delayed information about supporting school learning at home
- generic [non-specific] information in student reports and parent-teacher interviews
- confusion around homework.
This information will be used by the department and schools in developing processes and policies about classroom conversations and communication from the school to parents.
