Teaching Children to Accept Differences

Part of what makes Australia great is the variety of cultures and religions that co-exist. However, bigotry and racism are also real problems that our kids may face, or unfortunately engage in. As parents and carers, it is important that we teach our children to stand up for themselves in the face of discrimination while also checking that they don't discriminate or bully other kids.

Here are our top three tips for preparing children for engaging with difference and diversity:

    • Educate children about the different cultures and religions that exist in the world, being sure to emphasise that difference in skin colour, food, language, and beliefs is not "weird".
    • When children ask tough questions about differences between themselves and other students, don't shy away away from those conversations. Answer their questions honestly.
    • Cultivate empathy by asking questions such as "how would you want to be treated in X situation?", allowing children to recognise their common humanity while also acknowledging differences.

What are some conversations and tips you have had with your children to ensure they respect differences and prevent discriminatory behaviour and attitudes?
